Misty Peterson, MA, LPC
Trauma Informed Resiliency Counselor
Misty’s approach to counseling stems from a mindfulness orientation, a pursuit of wellness, and a belief in recovery. She is passionate about guiding clients towards self-discovery, personal fulfillment, and finding outlets for meaningful self-expression. She endeavors to support her clients in expanding their capacity to access their own personal wisdom, find purpose and inspiration in their lives, and foster a sense of compassion and self acceptance. In addition, her goal is to assist them in claiming their strengths, cultivating joy, and achieving peace of mind.
Misty has lived throughout the U.S., but she primarily hails from the South. She went to high school in a small Alabama town and attended undergraduate school at Auburn University. In college she earned a Bachelors degree in Psychology with a minor in Social Work. She graduated with top honors and was eager to continue her education. She returned to school and earned a Master’s Degree in Counseling from Southwestern College in Santa Fe, NM, in 2006. In graduate school she completed courses in Transpersonal Counseling and a certification in Expressive Arts Therapy. While living in the Southwest, Misty was exposed not only to the beauty and majesty of the area, but also to its unique history and rich culture as well. Her time in New Mexico was a pivotal point on her path, and truly a life changing experience!
Misty has been in the field of counseling now for over a decade and her background and experiences are quite varied. She has worked with children, adolescents, families, as well as adults, in both the public and private sector. During her graduate school internship, she focused on working with women and young female adolescents offering a number of experiential groups. Upon moving to Asheville, she obtained a position at CooperRiis, and worked as a Recovery Coach/Counselor. In this role, she supported adults that were in the process of rebuilding their lives and moving out of residential treatment programs back into the community. She provided a combination of individual and group therapy, and was inspired by the growth and transformations that she witnessed unfold in her clients.
Misty’s next venture turned her toward working with children and their families, in her position as a School Based Therapist with Universal MH. Here she honed her skills and abilities further, and moved into the role of Clinical Supervisor over a large team of counselors and other behavioral health professionals. Since that time, Misty has worked at RHA Health Services as a Program Director overseeing their Child and Family Services Department.
Misty has lived in Western North Carolina since 2007. She feels a deep connection to the Asheville community and welcomes the slower pace that this quaint town has to offer. Misty thoroughly appreciates the smaller things in life, and enjoys being active, getting out in nature, and listening to live music. She cherishes quality time with her “tween” son, and nurturing her relationships with family and friends.
Misty’s therapeutic style is described as “warm, genuine, and effective” and she welcomes the opportunity to work with you on successfully navigating your life transitions, managing issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, anger, and improving your relationships.
